What is Egg Reserve?
Egg reserve can be expressed as the number and quality of eggs women have. Girl babies begin to produce eggs in the womb. The number of eggs decreases and ends as age progresses, starting with menstruation until birth and afterwards.
What is Low Egg Reserve? (Low AMH)
‘Low egg reserve, women have a certain number of eggs. With advancing age, these eggs gradually decrease and their quality decreases. However, some women have less egg reserve than expected number of eggs, this is called low egg reserve. There are many reasons for low egg. However, the most important underlying cause is genetic factors.
Causes of Low Egg Reserve ?
The most important reason for the decrease in egg reserve is genetic predisposition and age. Especially in women with a family history of early menopause, low egg reserve is possible at a young age.
Other causes of low egg reserve are;
- Smoking and alcohol consumption, caffeine
- Chemotherapy
- Radiotherapy
- Chocolate Cyst (endometriosis)
- Surgery on the ovaries
- Environmental factors
- Harmful chemicals in foods
- Excess weight, unhealthy diet are the reasons for low egg reserve.
Decreased Egg Reserve Symptoms ?
Egg reserves are checked with ultrasonography (Usg) and blood test performed in the first days of menstruation in women. Thus, the number and quality of eggs suitable for the age of the woman is diagnosed. Reliable results are obtained after some hormone tests are done with Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH). On the 2nd or 3rd day of menstruation, the patient’s FSH and E2 values should also be evaluated together to make the diagnosis. These examinations give us information about the egg reserves in women.
The decrease in the period between two menstrual bleedings in women and the intensity of the menstrual bleeding are the most important signs that indicate a decrease in egg reserve.
Can Women with Low Egg Reserves Get Pregnant?
Egg freezing may be recommended for single women with low egg reserve. It is not recommended for married people to delay fertility. Low ovarian reserve is an irreversible process. They have a chance to have children in normal ways, but in order to have a child without losing much time, it is recommended that women with low egg reserve through IVF treatment should have children. In the treatment, fertilization is performed in the laboratory environment by using the highest quality eggs. As a result of the fertilization process, healthy embryos are obtained and transferred into the uterus.
